about

Guitar, fiddle and voice paired with creativity and unending passion are the main ingredients that the Scottish musician Steve Crawford (Ballad of Crows/Catford) and the German fiddler Sabrina Palm (Whisht!/Doherty, Palm and Topp) have used to create their debut album.

"In Balance“ was recorded at the inspiring setting of "Studio 1604" in Strathdon, Scotland under the direction of award-winning musician Jonny Hardie (Old Blind Dogs/Clype).

New compositions are combined with traditional material from Ireland and Scotland in a balanced mix of songs and instrumentals. Sabrina Palm displays a flair for strong melodies with her original tunes "Farewell Rory" and "The Session Night". Songs contain dark themes such as honour killing and clan battles, although these are tempered with odes to Mother Nature and love.

With "Twa Corbies/ Rabenballade" the duo has acknowledged their respective heritages by combining the lyrics of the Child Ballad "Twa Corbies" with a German version of the song. Steve Crawford contributes the original song "Hope remains", describing the story of a man reflecting on where his life has taken him and where it may yet lead.

With a mellifluous voice and his ability to stir emotion Steve Crawford impresses as a singer. His guitar mainly serves as an accompaniment to the fiddle and vocals, but also when solo passages are required these are delivered to great effect. Fiddler Sabrina Palm convinces with dynamic
bowing on the tunes while enhancing the song arrangements with her musical sensitivity. Irish uilleann piper Jarlath Henderson (duo with Ross
Ainslie, Disney-Film „Merida“) and Old Blind Dogs founding member Jonny Hardie on fiddle and vocals provide wonderful contributions to
several tracks, including a reel set and the ballad "Mill O’ Tiftie’s Annie".

The album was mixed and mastered by German musician and producer Jürgen Treyz (Cara, Litha) at Artes Tonstudio, Esslingen.
